Industrial Process Cooling Specialists
IRS Refrigeration are a necessary component of many cooling systems, cooling towers, and refrigeration equipment. The temperature of chilled water is controlled to precise specifications depending on the needs of a variety of industrial processes. Chillers for industrial applications can be centralized, where a single system serves multiple points of use, or decentralized, where individual cooling systems are placed at each point of use.
The main purpose of an industrial water chiller is to provide a constant flow of chilled water in order to cool down a machine or an area in a commercial or industrial facility. This allows for consistent temperatures to be maintained across a range of industrial applications, including food processing, pharmaceutical storage, and extensive warehousing. Industrial chillers can also be used to reduce ambient air temperatures, and can operate on vapor compression or absorption cycles.
When choosing an industrial chiller, you will need to consider the cooling load, which is a measure of the rate at which energy or heat must be removed from a space to maintain a desired temperature and humidity level. It is commonly measured in tons of refrigeration (TR or TOR) or BTU per hour.
A vapor compression chiller uses a pump to force a coolant, usually water, through small tubes in the condenser. As the coolant moves through the tubes, it picks up heat from the surrounding air, which is then released into the ambient outside air via the condenser. A fan then blows cooler ambient air over the top of the condenser tubes to help carry this heat away.
An absorption chiller, on the other hand, works in a completely different way. It uses lithium bromide as an absorbent, which attracts and absorbs a large amount of heat from the liquid. This is accomplished using a hermetic solution pump, which draws in a dilute lithium bromide solution from the bottom of the absorber shell. It then pushes this through a shell and tube heat exchanger for preheating, which is done in a vacuum.
The advantage of an absorption chiller is that it uses no mechanical parts, so maintenance and replacements are simpler than with a compressor-based cooling system. This is also a more environmentally friendly method of cooling because it doesn’t emit any greenhouse gases.
A refrigeration system isn’t complete without a good pump and piping system. These are responsible for distributing chilled water throughout a plant or industrial site, as well as maintaining the correct temperature levels in each zone. They can be gas-driven, steam-driven, or electric motor-driven.
In addition to chilled water piping and pumps, industrial refrigeration system design is important in creating an efficient system, as are the controls and monitoring devices. For example, an alarm system can be installed to notify operators when the system is in danger of failing, so that steps can be taken to avoid costly damage and downtime. For example, if an overflow occurs or there’s an oil leak, the alarm can turn on exhaust fans, shut down liquid feed solenoids, or even shut down the entire refrigeration system.
